The aging population in the Netherlands is increasing. The proportion of over-65s is expected to rise to 24.4% in 2035 and peak at around 25.1% around 2040 (source: CBS). This also means that the elderly will continue to live independently at home for longer and solutions are needed to create a safe living environment.

As part of this, Wednesday, May 13, saw the official going live of the pilot with the first AI fall detection homes in the Netherlands, realized in the municipality of Waalre. The target group are elderly people who want to live safely at home independently for longer and have an increased risk of falling. In fact, if someone falls in their own home later in life, it is essential for medical recovery that someone is found and helped as quickly as possible. This AI fall-detection equipment is already being used in care and nursing homes, but nowhere yet is it being applied in the home situation. Waalre is thus the first municipality in the Netherlands where WeConnect, as main financier and connector, makes the project possible with the various parties involved.

For this pilot, ten participants of Leefsamen in Waalre were equipped with fall detection devices with AI fall detection software from Kepler Vision Technologies. Through their alarm system, Leefsamen ensures that loved ones receive immediate notification via an app so that help can be provided quickly. With the help of these partners and Connectie Brainport, the technology has been built in such a way that it can be made scalable in North Brabant and beyond. In addition, Stichting Wonen Welzijn Zorg Waalre as representative ensures support within the community and the municipality of Waalre. The technology is now fully operational and this is currently being tested in practice with the first users.

With their fiber optic network, WeConnect facilitates innovations that do not yet get off the ground elsewhere in order, among other things, to accelerate developments in the field of healthcare within the Brainport region. The pilot is intended to optimize the technology in a home situation so that this service can soon be rolled out completely. Interested residents of Waalre can still sign up for the pilot: www.leefsamen.nl/kepler
